Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique on Reading Comprehension especially in Descriptive text at Islamic Junior High School 5 Merangin. In other words, the objective of this study were to find out whether or not Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique has significant effect on students’ reading comprehension and to find out whether there is significant defference between the students taught by Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique and those taught by teacher’s strategy. The method used in this study was quasi experimental research. The subject of this research was the eight grade students of Islamic Junior High School were randomly selected out as the sample of this research, and divided into two equal groups in which consist 24 students for experimental group and 24 students for control group. The instrument of collecting data used multiple choice items. Before doing the activity, the students were given pre-test. Then, the students were taught descriptive text by using CIRC techique. The last, the students were given post-test to know whether CIRC technique is effective or not. The result of this study showed that there was significance difference between students’ score in learning reading comprehension on descriptive text before and after applying CIRC technique. According to qaaqthe result of statistical calculation it can be seen that the students mean score of posttest in experimental class 66.96 was higher than pretest 64. The t observed (4.849) was higher then tcritical value (1.671) at the level of significance (0.05), and the df was 48. It can be seen concluded that CIRC technique is significantly affect the students’ Reading Comprehension compared with teacher’s strategy.
