Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the most frequent strategy used by students to write English essay, the correlation between students' writing strategies and their writing achievement and the contribution of writing strategies towards students' writing achievements. This is quantitative research with correlational design. The population in this study was the sixth semester of English Education program at FTK UIN STS Jambi which consisted of 4 classes with 97 students. The writer used total sampling which means all students in sixth semester involved in this research. The variables in this research were one independent variable (students' writing strategies) and one dependent variable (writing achievement). The data were collected by questionnaire and writing test. Based on the research findings, it revealed that the sixth semester students of English Education Program at FTK UIN STS Jambi employed revising strategies as the most frequent strategy used. The result of the coefficient correlation between students' writing strategies and their writing achievement was r=0.270. It means that those variables were positively correlated. However, r=0.270 was categorized as small correlation. The result of analyzing the significance value is 0.007,it means that 0.007<0.05. So, Null hypothesis (Ho) rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) accepted. The last, from the regression analysis found out that R Square is 0.096 or 9.6%. It means that the writing strategies gives contribution as much 9.6% to writing achievement.
