Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find (1) the correlation between students' writing motivation and students' writing ability (2) the correlation between students' writing anxiety and students' writing ability (3) the correlation among the students' writing motivation, students’ writing anxiety, and students' writing ability. This research is a quantitative type of correlation research. The population in this study were eighth grade students of Ahmad Dahlan Junior High School, Jambi City, which consisted of two classes with a total of 46 students. Data were collected using questionnaires and test. The researcher uses total sampling which means that the sample taken is all eighth grade students. Based on the research results, the results of the correlation between writing motivation and writing ability r= 0.459 with a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, so Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that the significance value is smaller than the stipulation, namely 0.05, which means that this variable has a correlation between writing motivation and writing ability. The correlation value shows a positive value that shows a sufficient correlation interpretation: adequate correlation between writing motivation and writing ability. Then, the result of the correlation between writing anxiety and writing ability r= 0.496 with a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that the significance value is smaller than the provision, namely 0.05, which means that this variable has a correlation between writing anxiety and writing ability. The correlation value shows a positive value which indicates a sufficient correlation interpretation: adequate correlation between writing anxiety and writing ability. Furthermore, the results of the correlation between writing motivation, writing anxiety and writing ability r= 0.538 which shows the level of reliability in the correlation category is sufficient: the correlation is adequate, so it can be concluded that writing motivation and anxiety together have a correlation with writing ability.
