Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate clauses that found in caption on Instagram. Instagram is a social networking site media which enables the users to upload photos and videos where they could write a caption under their post. Instagram caption becomes language that express the users’ emotions, showcase their feelings and is utilized to engage the users for many purposes. The researcher analyses about the mood types, speech function, and language style found in caption clauses produced by users with verified accounts. Verified accounts or official blue are accounts which have been admitted by Instagram company as authentic presence of a notable public figure, celebrity, or global brand. There are three formulation of problems in this study, they are: 1) What are the mood types found in Caption on Instagram Produced by Users with Verified Accounts, 2) What are the speech functions found in Caption on Instagram Produced by Users with Verified Accounts, 3) What are language styles found in Caption on Instagram Produced by Users with Verified Accounts. To answer each formulation of problems, the researcher uses some theory. In answering the mood types and speech function, the researcher uses Systemic Functional Linguistic proposed by Halliday, while to find the languages style, the researcher uses Chaika theory. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The sources of the data in this research was caption clauses on Instagram. The researcher analyzes 50 captions where there are 25 captions of Male and 25 captions of Female. Meanwhile, the technique of collecting data was documentation. The result of this study are : 1. The classifications of major clauses that found in male’s caption are divided into declarative mood are 20 (52,6%) , interogative mood are 3 (37,5%), and imperative mood are 2 (50%). While, the classifications of major clauses that found in female’s caption are divided into declarative mood are 18 (47,4%), interogative mood are 5 (62,5%), and imperative mood are 2 (50%). 2. The classifications of speech function that found in male’s caption are divided into statement are 20 (52,6%) , questions are 3 (37,5%),and commands are 2 (50%). While, the classifications of major clauses that found in female’s caption are divided into statements are 18 (47,4%), questions are 5 (62,5%), and commands are 2 (50%). 3. The researcher classifies the into six types of language style; they are frozen, formal, informal, consulcative, casual, and intimate style. The researcher found 50 clauses in the text. All types of language style above are found in the clauses, except the frozen style. In From all the clauses in the text,the researcher found 11formal style,27 informal style,5 casual style, 5 intimate style, and 2 consulcative style. Those are divided into caption of male and caption female. In male’s caption language style is divided into informal style are 13 (51,9%), formal style are 9 (81,9%), intimate style are 3 (50%), while in female’s caption language style is divided into informal style are 13 (48,1%), formal style are 2 (18,1%),casual style are 5 (100%), consulcative style are 2 (100%), and intimate style are 3 (50%)
