Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the correlation between students‘ writing anxiety and students‘ writing ability by using two kind of instrument such as questionnaire of students‘ writing anxiety and write a single procedure paragraph of students‘ writing ability. This research used quantitative research with correlation design. The target of population in this study was the third semester English education and consisted of four classes with the total number of students was 107. Besides, the researcher used correlational design and also used purpose sampling which can choose the sample those that representative and get represent of population. Thus, the researcher took one class as sample to analyze. The sample was 3 C which consists of 27 students. The result of questionnaire, the researcher found that from 27 students at C class in third semester of English education, there was 10 students (37%) were categorized as very high of Anxiety, and 17 students (63%) were categorized as high of Anxiety. The other side of procedure paragraph test, the researcher found that from 27 students at C class in third semester of English education of State Islamic University Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, 1 student (4%) were categorized as very good, 4 students (15%) were categorized as good, 14 students (51%) were categorized as average, and 8 students (30%) were categorized as fair. The correlation between students‘ writing anxiety and students‘ writing ability is r = -0.994, it means that there was negative correlation between students‘ writing anxiety and students‘ writing ability. Negative correlation means that the more often students feeling anxiety in writing, the lower score they would get in the writing test. Besides, it could be concluded that the correlation between students‘ writing anxiety and students‘ writing ability is significant. It means that Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000<0.05.
