Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the basic skills in learning English. However, students have difficulties in mastering the speaking skill because they do not practice speaking frequently. This study is aimed to investigate the students perception on the use of role play technique in speaking class at SMA N 5 Sarolangun. This research is categorize as descriptive qualitative research. It involved at XI graders students of senior high school in Sarolangun 2020-2021 academic year are the participant. Instrument were the researcher himself (the interview). The data was collected though the interview. It is English teacher always apply role play in every learning process. That is what makes researches want to do research, how is the perception of students that use of role play in learning speaking. The result of the study show that: (1) the using of role play can increase students motivation; (2) role play in education has a positive impact; (3) role play also has a negative impact. English teacher always using role play in learning process in class speaking. The students showed some improvments in every cycle during the implementation of role play in the class. Therefore, a role play becomes an appropriate technique in speaking activities
