Abstract

The purposes of this research are to know the factors literary students choose the topic of the theses, to know the reason they choose the certain theory, and to find out the contribution of the theses to researchers, reader, and institution. This research is to show the theses of English literature students at the State Islamic University of STS Jambi are produced so that formed the dominant discourse and marginalize discourse. This research applies the Critical Discourse Analysis theory and Genealogy approach by Michel Foucault. The research uses descriptive qualitative research to describe the result. The results of the research show that there are external and internal factors. External factors shows that there is a practice a power in producing the theses, like support statement from the head of department and also supervisors. Meanwhile the internal factors, there are discipline, commentary, and author of production the discourse. Then there is the relation between power and knowledge to apply the theories in the theses, the relation happened between students and lectures that practice power to limit knowledge. The last is the theses have a contribution for researcher, reader, and institution. The writer finds that theses as a practice and have effects. For researcher is to get scholar degree. Theses also contribute the reader especially English literature students to make their theses as references. The writer did not find the theses which use film as topic contribute for institution, and so far the theses are only for administration prerequisite. Beside that, from the dominant topics in the theses, it makes another topics marginalized.
